Bicycle

They’re faded and worn out, but they get the job done. The bicycle is the symbol of seasonal workers in the fields of Saluzzo and Syracuse, their only means of moving from the city to the fields, and vice versa. That’s why the Saluzzo Migrante project, created by a local Catholic charity, set up a collection point for dozens of used bicycles. Volunteers restore them and loan them to workers for free. When the year ends, the workers can leave their bicycles in the repair shop until they return for the next harvest.

Farm owners also provide each worker with a reflective vest, so they can cycle in safety after dark. Some workers travel more than 20 kilometers per day to get to the fields, usually on narrow and busy roads.
